KB100002 | CAUSES OF SQL SERVER PROBLEMS

Product: ETS4
Version: 4.0
Booth: 2011-03-03

Summary

This article lists some of the known causes of problems with the installation or operation of Microsoft SQL Server 2008. If you need to reinstall SQL Server after resolving the cause, you should first remove any remnants of the failed installation (as described here ) and then reinstall ETS4.

Details

Program Files folder is compressed or encrypted
Symptoms: During setup, a message appears stating that the Applications folder is compressed or encrypted.
Cause: SQL Server does not allow installation in compressed or encrypted folders.
Removal: In the properties dialog of the Applications folder, uncheck Compressed and Encrypted. Then please reinstall the SQL Server.
The computer name and user name are the same
Symptoms: When trying to create a database, the ETS4 stops. In the Windows Experience Viewer, there is an entry “” is not a valid login or you do not have permission”.
Cause: SQL Server does not allow the user name and computer name to be the same.
Removal: If possible, rename the computer. Alternatively, you could create a new user with a different name (unfortunately, renaming the user does not help, as only the display name is changed).
Performance counter entries in the registry are inconsistent
Symptoms: SQL Server cannot be installed. In the setup window, it says “The system cannot open the file”. See the %TEMP%\Ets4SetupHelper.log file for the exact error text:
The following error occurred: The performance counter registry hive is corrupted. To continue, you must repair the performance counter registry hive. For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956. Error result: -2067922940 Result facility code: 1214 Result error code: 4 Please review the summary.txt log for further details Microsoft (R) SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup 10.50.1600.01Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Cause: There are inconsistencies in the Windows registry that prevent the installation of SQL Server.
Removal:
  1. If “Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2” appears in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel > , uninstall it first (download description).
  2. Important: make a backup copy of the registry as described here .
  3. Follow the instructions in this Microsoft article. If you don’t understand something, you’d better ask.
There is an outdated SQL Server 2008 installation in a language other than English
Symptoms: When trying to create a database, an error message appears at the very end stating that msxmlsql.dll cannot be loaded.
Cause: ETS4 installs SQL Server 2008 R2 in the English language version. If a local language version of SQL Server 2008 (not R2) is already installed on the computer, the translation files in the local language will no longer match the SQL Server installation.
Removal: One of the following actions will help:

  • Uninstall the localized version of SQL Server 2008.
  • Upgrading the localized version of SQL Server 2008 to R2
  • In [ProgramFiles]\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Shared\Resources, delete all folders except 1033
